Below are some presentations that HEIP staff have given or think are useful.

Supporting the Success of Diverse Nursing Students
September 18, 2009

This conference brought together over 80 attendees who came together to learn from experts within Minnesota about the challenges and successes associated with supporting the education of nursing students who are from diverse ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.  These students not only are embarking on a rigorous educational path, they may also be learning a new language and culture at the same time.  Conference objectives included: 

  • A new understanding of the role of cultural diversity in education and practice
  • Teaching strategies and tools which have been proven to be effective in supporting students from diverse backgrounds 
  • Future plans for continuing the conversation

  • Engaging Youth in Health Care Careers Through Partnerships: Lawrence Colaizy, J.D., Minnesota Department of Health; Michael Mitchell, M.Ed., Minnesota Department of Education; John Flatt, Detroit Lakes Public Schools; Sonya McNamara, Healthcare Education - Industry Partnership; Guy Finne, Mayo Clinic.

    The health care workforce shortage is a long-term reality but health care providers and secondary educators are collaborating to provide meaningful work-based learning experiences for Minnesota. This session will provide an overview of the goals and objectives of the Health and Long-term Care Career Promotion Grant and discuss how Detroit Lakes used this grant to help a consortium of schools and employers to create a successful health careers program; it will also provide the employer viewpoint of partnerships and how Mayo Clinic is promoting Career Awareness in their facility.

  • Building Health Liaisons Among Multiple Communities: Anne Willaert, L.S.W., Healthcare Education - Industry Partnership; Loretta Jean Heuer, Ph.D., R.N., Migrant Health Service, INC.; Andrea Smith, Migrant Health Service, INC.; MariLou Gonzalez, Migrant Health Service, INC.,

    The Community Health Worker Project is a statewide system change initiative to improve health care quality and access, diversify the workforce and eliminate disparities.  This presentation will also discuss the implementation of a Diabetes Lay Educator Program in the Hispanic migrant farm worker population.

    This panel presentation will discuss supply and demand of workforce shortages, highlighting current and projected staffing needs for the clinical laboratories in Minnesota. Hear an update on clinical laboratory education in Minnesota and a review of the Healthcare Education - Industry Partnerhsip clinical laboratory workgroup activities.
