Supporting the Success of Diverse Nursing Students
September 18, 2009
This conference brought together over 80 attendees who came together to learn from experts within Minnesota about the challenges and successes associated with supporting the education of nursing students who are from diverse ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds. These students not only are embarking on a rigorous educational path, they may also be learning a new language and culture at the same time. Conference objectives included:
- A new understanding of the role of cultural diversity in education and practice
- Teaching strategies and tools which have been proven to be effective in supporting students from diverse backgrounds
- Future plans for continuing the conversation

The health care workforce shortage is a long-term reality but health
care providers and secondary educators are collaborating to provide
meaningful work-based learning experiences for Minnesota. This session
will provide an overview of the goals and objectives of the Health
and Long-term Care Career Promotion Grant and discuss how Detroit
Lakes used this grant to help a consortium of schools and employers
to create a successful health careers program; it will also provide
the employer viewpoint of partnerships and how Mayo Clinic is promoting
Career Awareness in their facility.

The Community Health Worker Project is a statewide system change initiative
to improve health care quality and access, diversify the workforce
and eliminate disparities. This presentation will also discuss
the implementation of a Diabetes Lay Educator Program in the Hispanic
