National Health Science Career Cluster/ Biomedical Health Sciences Initiative

Background

The National Consortium on Health Science and Technology Education (NCHSTE) is a national partnership of individuals and organizations with a vested interest in health science and technology education. Organized in 1991, its purpose is to stimulate creative and innovative leadership for ensuring a well-prepared healthcare workforce.

Career Cluster Model

The NCHSTE health science career cluster model is a continuum of learning for K-12 education. The model is standard- based and partnership-driven.

Career PathwayBeginning with career awareness and exploration in elementary grades, the career cluster model expands to focus on career orientation and preparation in middle and high school. Strong academic foundation coursework is provided which is essentially the Core Curriculum, technical skills, health maintenance practices and information technology applications. The cluster pathway represents the post secondary program leading to the career specialties.

This national secondary curriculum framework will engage students in learning rigorous academic and technical knowledge, raise student achievement in science, math, English and social studies, improve readiness for college, increase the number of students completing post secondary degrees and increase the number of students selecting careers in health and biomedical sciences.

Pathways
The career pathways have been developed to assist students in selecting courses appropriate for their career interest in health care. Each pathway begins with the academic courses required for graduation. The academic courses listed are examples of common course selections. Based on the student's career goals and college entrance requirements, the recommended electives may include additional academic courses such as foreign language, specific math, science, and/or language arts, or others. Each pathway offers a full range of career opportunities from entry level to management, including technical and professional careers. Pathways include:

Diagnostic Services - create a picture of a patient's health at a single point in time.

Therapeutic Services - maintain or change the health status of the patient over time.

Support Services - provide a favorable environment for the delivery of health care.

Health Informatics - provides functions that support and document patient care.

Biotechnology Research and Development - use scientific and technical advancements to enhance diagnostic and therapeutic abilities in health care.

Youth Apprenticeship

Over the past five years, HEIP has worked closely with the Minnesota Department of Education to develop a sound educational experience for secondary students interested in healthcare careers. The projects have included development of model health careers curriculum including the Healthcare Core Curriculum and the Healthcare Youth Apprenticeship Model. HEIP, the Dept. of Education , and the Health Occupations Students of America have sponsored conferences and regional technical assistance sessions. The focus is on building partnerships with schools, higher education, healthcare providers and community organizations to support local health careers programs.

The Healthcare Youth Apprenticeship Model was developed in partnership with ISD 287, teachers and healthcare professionals. Nursing, laboratory, rehabilitation and support service models have been completed. The models allow schools and their healthcare provider partners to develop apprenticeships quickly and efficiently and in a manner that meets all educational standards.

The model includes a guidebook, mentor manual, and student/parent guide. The guidebook contains the standards for youth apprenticeship and all the forms a partnership would need to start a program. Mentorship has been identified as a key piece in any apprenticeship program. The mentor manual contains communication ideas for adults who haven’t worked with teenagers. The student/parent guide contains apprentice expectations. There has been tremendous interest in this model across the state.
