Core Curriculum:
Curriculum that prepares students and incumbent workers for the rapidly changing healthcare workplace is central to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System’s healthcare programs. HEIP’s Healthcare Core Curriculum focuses on patient and direct care. The eight modules are competency-based, entry-level foundation courses that can be taken in any order. The modules are research based and aligned with state and national education and skill standards, and were written by faculty from several campuses and disciplines in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System.

Equal to four semester credits, the Healthcare Core Curriculum is designed to start students on an educational pathway in healthcare, and to provide a sound orientation to the healthcare workplace. The Core is being incorporated into educational pathways in nursing and allied health. It is a model curriculum for high school health careers programs, and has been adapted for use for English language learners. Minnesota Job Skills Partnership-funded projects have used the Core for incumbent worker training and for orienting new healthcare employees.

Core Curriculum Text Book Note from the Publisher Thompson Del Mar:

With the advancements in technology, we were able to address many of the concerns of the old edition.  The custom text comes from 4 different books, but we were able to reflow and reformat all the material so it has a consistent layout and design throughout the book.  The entire text was repaginated and a new index created.  The book is also a four-color text.  The new ISBN is 1401892094 and it is $50 net.  Schools can order by calling Customer Service at 800-347-7707.  We did a larger run of this book and carry inventory on it, so there is no longer a need for the 4-6 week notice for ordering. There is also an instructor's resource CD available.

With funding from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (formerly DTED), grants were made to several of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities campuses to develop flexible education programs in nursing and laboratory technology. Projects include streamlined nursing education pathways, flexible evening programs, new offerings in rural communities, distance learning, and collaborations among several campuses.

Sim Man Curriculum:
Additional curriculum work is underway for second degree accelerated nursing programs and simplifying articulation from associate to baccalaureate degree programs. “Hands-on” nursing skills curriculum is being developed to meet the training needs of healthcare staff and students using Sim Man simulator. Simulation technology is a growing tool for improving clinical education outcomes in nursing and allied health. The simulation Sim Man, allows students and staff to practice clinical skills and abilities in a safe setting. The simulators provide feedback to students and help them develop critical thinking skills.

Community Health Worker Curriculum:
Through a grant provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Minnesota, HEIP will be developing a new statewide curriculum for Community Health Workers. This new program will fill the void in a formal, standardized training for Community Health Worker's, meet the needs of the Minnesota workforce, create a career ladder into other health related careers, and be the starting point to a more ethnically diverse workforce to help meet the cultural health needs of Minnesota's diverse populations.
