Minnesota Healthcare Core Curriculum (HCCC)

The Healthcare Core Curriculum is a series of entry-level courses for the student with an interest in health care but little or no experience. The student will be introduced to entry-level concepts containing necessary information for all health care workers. Emphasis is on awareness of client needs and basic skill development. The courses are competency based and may be taken in any order. There are 8 modules worth a total 4 credits for 64 hours of class. Each module can easily be offered on-campus or off-campus. If you have a partnership with a healthcare system this would be a wonderful course to offer at their facility.

What is the focus of the Healthcare Core Curriculum?

  • Patient & Direct Care
  • Competency based
  • Connects to Health Careers
  • Entry-level courses (Foundations taken in any order)
  • Research Based Modules
  • Alignment with State, and National Standards

Nursing Assistant Skill Set!
MnSCU faculty has developed a Nursing Assistant Skill Set with the approval of the Department of Health. Students can take the skill set plus the MN Healthcare Core Curriculum and be eligible to take the National Registry Exam. The skill set will be 64 hours long and worth 2 lab credits. There will be 40 hours of on-campus lab and 24 hours clinical experience.

  • Teach the course according to the core competencies developed.
  • Utilize the resources that are listed under each of the units if desired.
  • The author of each of the modules is listed, contact them with any questions.

Customized Textbook
Core Curriculum Text Book Note from the Publisher Thompson Del Mar:

With the advancements in technology, we were able to address many of the concerns of the old edition.  The custom text comes from 4 different books, but we were able to reflow and reformat all the material so it has a consistent layout and design throughout the book.  The entire text was repaginated and a new index created.  The book is also a four-color text.  The new ISBN is 1401892094 and it is $50 net.  Schools can order by calling Customer Service at 800-347-7707.  We did a larger run of this book and carry inventory on it, so there is no longer a need for the 4-6 week notice for ordering.    There is also an instructor's resource CD available.

Integration of Core Curriculum

  • Integration with nursing assistant curriculum creates clearly articulated pathway in nursing that is recognized statewide.
  • The MN Healthcare Core Curriculum committee and staff are working with state Lab Directors and programs to create a lab pathway.
  • K-12 Curriculum will be articulated to post secondary education.
  • Southern Minnesota Healthcare (MJSP grant) in partnership with the Emerging Worker project is developing an ESL level Pre-core curriculum.

Evaluation of the MN Healthcare Core Curriculum
An assessment committee of the Healthcare Core Curriculum will be responsible for revisions and receiving feedback. Please provide feedback to the author of the module regarding any suggested changes.

What’s Next?
There is a committee meeting to discuss Level II Healthcare Core Curriculum. ESL Pre-Core Curriculum is being developed by a partnership consisting of; MnSCU, Adult Basic Education and the healthcare industry.

We invite you to review, online in PDF format, an overview of the Health Care Core Curriculum.
